Malachi’s Right to Challenge wins government attention

Government Minister Don Foster MP has cited Malachi Specialist Family Support Services as an example of a local organisation making the most of the newly introduced Community Right to Challenge.
The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Communities and Local Government was speaking to a group of Midlands organisations as part of a visit to Birmingham, when he encouraged more community groups to make use of the rights, which also include the Community Right to Build and the Community Right to Bid.
Malachi is currently preparing a formal Expression of Interest to take on integrated family support services run by Birmingham City Council – a challenge which has come about because of its ‘overwhelming commitment’ to helping local families.
Malachi passionately believes that its model for supporting children and families offers a much greater potential to help improve the lives of local people than that currently used by the council. Now it is backing up its claims with action, issuing a Challenge in respect of the Billesley portion of the city-wide service.
Should Malachi be successful in winning a contract to provide the service, it will be operated from the extensively refurbished community centre which it runs in Yardley Wood Road. The centre was recently transferred to Malachi by Birmingham City Council and grants worth £411k have been secured to extend and improve it.
The community centre will operate a wide range of services and facilities to meet the needs of the local community who can access advice and support, learn new school and access sport, hobbies and craft initiatives.
Chief Executive Officer Gordon Lee said, “We are delighted that the minister is interested in our Challenge as we have an overwhelming commitment to helping local children and families, and we genuinely believe that based on our expertise, experience and dedication, we can make an excellent case for operating this service from Billesley for Billesley.”
NB Malachi was founded in 1991 to support children affected by family breakdown. It was established as a registered charity, and named Malachi Community Trust (MCT).  Its aim is to engage and give support and advocacy to children and young people affected by complex and adverse family circumstances.
In August 2009, in response to the challenges of growth, Malachi Specialist Family Support Services CIC (MSFSS CIC) was also formed. The two organisations work closely together and are linked constitutionally.
